Navajo basket

History:
This traditional Navajo wedding basket is woven with natural red and black dyed yucca leaves.
The tight closure is braided. The design has a gap in it called 'Shipapu', representing the path of communication between the ancestral worlds of the Navajo and the present world.
It must always point east during ceremonies. These baskets were used in various ways including to hold sacred corn meal during the wedding ceremony.
